Photographs from a trip to Awol Studios this morning. I went down to Awol Studios for a ‘final’ round of photos for my album cover this morning. Megan came along too to give a bit of art direction. I took a few risks with my camera to get images of above and below the lift but I think those are the best ones.
The trip came about after I contacted Hayley Fylnn who knows everything about quirky Manchester and writes in 22 Magazine, She put me in contact with Awol Studios. They have 1 small public lift and 1 industrial sized one which is half in commission.

Spent the day planningg out the next part of NMP today with George. Planned out exactly what we wanted to achieve and mapped out a time frame of what is possible. The amount of work is a bit daunting, but if we follow the timetable everything should go well.
Expect big things from STF in the near future!
Planning the next part of NMP. First of all we wrote down a list of things that we wanted to achieve. Then wrote down how to achieve them and then when to to them. So little time left to do so much…
This is an update on where I’m up to with the first part of NMP
I’m really behind on my original plan because my idea has changed a few times and I’ve gone so far down down each route to find it isn’t working. I took some images but they didn’t have a concept which could be taken across all of my outcomes SO
Merchandise- Half done
EP- The concept for my cover is to have an old door which is locked with a padlock and chain. This represents the title Path of Least Resistance and the song lyrics because it’s about getting through a mental barrier to the other side and the desire to see the other side. I haven’t yet got images of this but I plan to over the next 2 days in Ancoats. I also wanted to find an old lift with pull across mash door as this would be more interesting. So I emailed Hayley Flynn who I found from 22Mag, she knows all about Manchesters hidden gems and she put me on to Awol Studios who I’m going to pay a visit to. As a link to this I am going to have a limited edition key memory stick engraved with the logo which holds extra tracks and a password to be entered on the website. I’m still looking at ways to package this
Poster- Not done yet but this will come after I get my photos
Microsite- Designed but need photos and extra content bit
Manchester Digital Talent Day 2013
So last Wednesday I went along to this event which was quite an eyeopener. Initially it was a bit daunting walking in to the room full of professionals but they were all really welcoming and helpful.
First I went to the talk from the BBC. They explained the Department of Future Media which provided all of the interactive coverage of the Olympics last year. They have a base at Media City along with BBC Sport, childrens, learning and radio. The aim of Future Media is to create extra output for the BBC, beyond TV and the red button- ipad apps, online games, video streams, catch-up platforms on Xbox, mobile, Tivo and creating new ways for viewers to interact with programming such as voting on the Voice. They are constantly challenging what will be next and keeping the momentum from the Olympics as they know “the world is watching”. They are currently looking for Software Engineers and UX designers for their graduate/ trainee schemes which can be applied for online.
"You need a real understanding of the audience. Visual design can only get you so far"
One thing I’m getting to grips with at the moment is the various job roles available in the digital creative industry. There are so many roles within web I don’t understand but front-end developer seems to fit most of my criteria.
After the talk I walked round the companies with Megan and Rachel. We chatted to Clock and Code who are both big companies with great work and opportunities for us students. I also went over to Reason who I researched online before going and I really like their work and they were really friendly so definitely somewhere I want to be. I left them with my CV and business card and followed up afterwards with a tweet.
Overall a really good day. But I need to really understand which exact role/s I need to aim for.
some more screen shots from todays digital publishing class, these ones are showing the alternating horizontal and vertical screens. Amazing how straight forward all this DP stuff is, I’m quite familiar with InDesign so that obviously helps but it’s just a few extra tools and theres so much you can do with it! Decided I’m going to think of some way to put this to use in my own time!
Looks like I’m the star of the Level 5’s design for ipad work. I’m looking forward to doing more with STF in the coming weeks
I went on the Manchester Underground tour the other day. Partly because I thought it would be interesting and partly to get more images for NMP. The tunnels were under the Great Northern building. Most of my pictures were flooded with the camera flash because all we had was torch light. There was about 30 people on the tour and i tried my best to get pictures with no-one in while keeping up with the group
