This weekend I’ve been back to Media City to volunteer with the Beeb. This time for an event called Give an Hour: Summer of Sport, which aims to get people more confident about interacting online and getting the most from BBC Sports coverage. Each group taking part was given access to an iPad or laptop. I was given an iPad to play with help answer any extra questions people had about finding stuff online and how best to use social media.

Sean McGinty from BBC Lancs and BBC Introducing gave an hour sessions on social media, twitter in particular. We got people tweeting and hash tagging for the first time about the event and finding potential people to follow based on their interests. I helped a man interested in birds to search for and follow the RSPB and tweet the celebrity guests that were there giving Q+A sessions. I also met a librarian who wanted to know how she could use twitter to promote her library.

On saturday the jolly Chris Hollins was on hand to give advice on how technology helps keep him connected. It was his first visit to MediaCity after leaving BBC Breakfast when it moved to Salford. On sunday Fatima Whitbread MBE came to talk about her Olympic journey and Javelin triumphs. As well as her decision to move towards reality TV and I’m a Celebrity. But people seemed more interested in the tennis for some reason..

There was also an interesting demonstration from Mike Burnett, who is in charge of the BBC’s 2012 Portal & Olympic Torch Relay site. He talked about how they will be organising 24 live HD streams and 2,500 hours of coverage though the BBC websites, mobile apps, tv and Facebook. Overall it was a very rewarding weekend and I hope that everyone went away knowing something new and passes their knowledge on to others. A lot of people were just saying how much they wanted an iPad.
