NVA’s extraordinary public art performance Speed of Light, brought The Quays in Salford to life in March 2013.

A centrepiece of the Edinburgh International Festival and recently staged in the docklands of Yokohama in Japan, the night-time work combines light, intentional movement and sound changing the way we perceive about a chosen environment.

Hundreds of runners in specially commissioned LED light suits animated beautiful, choreographed patterns of light flowing through key parts of The Quays including canal banks, bridges and public spaces around The Lowry, the Imperial War Museum North, MediaCityUK and BBC North.

Over 8,000 people from Greater Manchester and beyond came to witness abstract art written on the grandest scale: a work that can be simultaneously monumental and intimate.

3rd years (Communication and MINT), the collection of images and information for the We Made a Show website has begun but (as you can see) not many people have submitted yet. This site will look great with everyones work together and be a good taster of what is to come at the show.

A drop box has been set up for everyone to be submitted to (I believe the login has been posted on Facebook) if not you can ask Tash, myself, George or Megan (or anyone else who has submitted), the sooner work comes in the sooner the site can go live and start promoting the show.

What you need to submit is in a document in the drop box.

Yes we need more work. I’m hoping to get the site up by bank holiday. Login details on facebook

In the last few weeks of our NMP, we had a second year called Douglas give us a hand. One thing that was mentioned in tutorials was that an online pdf version of the app would be nice for people without an ipad, which can be linked from the STF website with issuu. After creating all of the page designs for our app, we handed the inDesign files over to Douglas to see what he could do. It was a tricky task, especially as the app version could fit more on a single page using the interactive features. It was sort of like working backwards but me and Megan helped him out while we organised our boards. It was very helpful having Douglas on the team as he helped when Megan was off 1/2 days a week on placement. Other jobs he has done include helping cut down large sheets of paper for our swatch book, screen printing, adjusting measurements for the 3D logo and putting up posters for our brief around uni.

Initial and developed badges to be used in the promotional packs. The first page shows all of the possible colour combinations for the logos and badges. Some of these didn’t work that well so George refined them to the final badges on the right.

These are screenshots of creating the scrolling contents page for the app at different stages of development. Each change is subtle but takes longer than expected to do. This is because the scrolling area has to be done in a separate document, each item has to be grouped in a specific way and then pasted in to a frame on the actual app document.

The other day George assembled the 3D papercraft logos that he designed. These will be used as part of the promotional pack and will be packaged in a coloured STF box.

The papercraft logo will also be available as a download on the STF website.

I thought that it would be a nice feature to create an interactive Exquisite Corpse game using the typefaces from the website. I created a canvas in Photoshop for which I could place all of the sections of the letters in a horizontal row.

I placed the images in scrollable frames and added the arrows to show the user to scroll the frame. George then added the button at the top which brings a pop up explanation of the origin of the game.

After showing this page to a few people it became clear that the scrolling function wasn’t obvious enough. This is because people were swiping the edge of the screen because of the arrow icons (as shown on the guide page). This goes to the next page rather than moving the letters. The solution would be to reposition/ change the arrows and have the page load with a random combination of sections.

Today was a craft day. We made some mini brand guideline books for quick reference to colour values and logo usage. Megan re-printed the pages on her ink-jet as from previous experience the laser printer didn’t like the card we wanted to use. I also put together the boxes which I screen printed with Douglas last week. These will hold the 3D logo which is 4 separate boxes linked together with slot tabs as when we tried with glue it didn’t look quite right. Shown here is the b+w final mock up. The template will be available to download from the STF website soon.

Overall we are really happy with these, but one thing we would like to have done is screen print the brand guidelines cover with white rather than black.

Me and Megan have both been on different placements during our NMP as well as being involved with the DNA quiz, which has meant some things were put on hold and more work during the evenings. I’m now concentrating on NMP while Megan has placement on wed/ thurs. Jo suggested that I team up with a second year for an extra pair of hands to help me out. Douglas, who came from Brazil to study here, has been really helpful and he’s learning on the job which is also a benefit to him. His first task was to photocopy and cut the Type Brief posters and put them around uni.

Last week Douglas discovered the process of screen printing and he helped me cut the paper to the right size, mix the paints, mark out the screen and swap over the tote bags- which had to be done quickly as the screen dries up quite quickly. I haven’t screen printed since first year and now I can see why as the process is time consuming and the results don’t always turn out as expected.

The tote bags turned out really good but the prints on paper didn’t go so well. I think the reason was not putting enough paint down as I needed to cover a larger area and I don’t think the squeegee liked me.

Today I’ve done a spot of coding for the holding page I mocked up yesterday for We Made a Show. I’m using site44.com to test out the page. It converts html, css files etc from Dropbox in to a working site with url anyone can view.

I’ve also updated the page for the pub quiz with new images and taken of the eventbrite bit
